Geography

Anna Maria Island is a barrier island on the Florida Gulf Coast. The island is part of Manatee County, stretches approximately 7 miles, bounded by the Gulf Coast on the West, Longboat pass to the South, Anna Maria Sound to the East and Tampa Bay to the North.

Anna Maria Island consists of three cities: Anna Maria in the North, Holmes Beach in the middle and Bradenton Beach to the South. The Cortez Bridge and Manatee Bridge are the two bridges which connect the island to the mainland making it accessible to motorists and pedestrians. In 2005 the Federal consensus found the combined population of the island to be 8,500.

The broad beaches of Anna Maria Island are synonymous with the islands beauty and charm. A convenient drive to the Sarasota airport, the island is a bird sanctuary and home to an array of thriving wildlife. From May to October sea turtles come ashore to lay eggs, bottlenose dolphins and manatees play in the waters of the Gulf.

This pedestrian community boasts convenient beach access, pastel-colored homes, an array of local shops and restaurants which line Pine Street. Music abounds at establishments on the weekends and on Wednesday and Sundays, the seasonal market at Coquina Beach in Bradenton Beach features local artists and artisans. The views are spectacular throughout Anna Maria Island, taking in an Bay sunset by the wooden City Pier built in 1912, is not to be missed. No binoculars are needed to observe parakeets, roseate spoonbills, pelicans and more. A free trolley runs seven days a week on Anna Maria Island, traveling North to South on Gulf Drive which runs the entire length of the island. Slowing down and living on island time with toes in the sand of Anna Maria Island is an unforgettable experience.
